Sing Out, My Soulis our annual Black History Month concert event with short pieces representative of music from the African continent, non-idiomatic works of Black composers, and traditional spirituals and gospel.
Phenomenal Woman was inspired by the words of Maya Angelou, this concert celebrates Women’s History Month and amplifies the voices of women composers and poets. It features choral pieces, art songs, piano works and poetry readings.
Sounds of the Season – Half of the program is built around Margaret Bonds’ Ballad to the Brown King, a short oratorio featuring the text of Langston Hughes. The second half will feature holiday works composed and arranged by composers of color.
Gala: Ain’t Misbehavin’ – This musical revue is a tribute to the black musicians of the 1920s and 1930s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of blossoming creativity, cultural awareness, and ethnic pride, and takes its title from the 1929 Fats Waller song “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” It was a time when Manhattan nightclubs like the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom were the playgrounds of high society and Lenox Avenue dives were filled with piano players banging out the new beat known as swing.
Our intergenerational choir, composed of students, professional musicians, and choral enthusiasts, joins voices this season to amplify works by Adolphus Hailstork, Margaret Bonds, and Maya Angelou.
