Modeled after the form and movements of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, Total Praise re-frames and re-contextualizes the movements of traditional Latin Requiem mass with sacred compositions by African-American composers. This concert explores themes of hope, struggle, loss, remembrance, and joy, all of these of our shared human experience that transcend cultural divides.
The intergenerational choir will present compositional works by Moses Hogan, Zanaida Robles, Rollo Dilworth, B.E. Boykin, and more. The centerpiece of the performance is “Dies Irae” from José Maurício Nunes Garcia’s Requiem which was almost lost to history. This concert concludes with Richard Smallwood’s iconic gospel work, “Total Praise”.
